Club Lights - Band Lighting for Beginners Part 1

I've got a gig - what to do about club lights?

The question that most of us who do lighting get asked is “My band is doing a gig next week. What should we do about stage or club lighting ?. You would much rather be playing your bass but, as your keyboard player is in charge of sorting a PA system, you have been given the task of getting some club lights. Performance LED Lighting gives you some tips on band stage or club lighting for beginners.

Club Lights

Deciding what you need to light your band depends on the size of your gig but let’s assume that, as you are doing your own band lighting, it is not Wembley Stadium. Choosing your club lights still involves exactly the same choices as those that face the Lighting Designer for the Stones (or Lady Ga Ga, if you prefer).

Got Power?

Go visit the venue for your gig and access the electricity situation for all your gear. You will need this to power your PA and backline gear so plugging lights into it is going to use more juice. Find out how much power is available and how it comes out of the wall (what kind of socket connections they have). In the typical bar or club in the US, a single 20 Amp socket could provide up to 2400w of power and multiple circuits can provide multiples of this. With some band stage lighting using up to 1000w watts each, you can see how important planning ahead is. And don’t forget that it might not only be your band that is using the power – what is supplying the bar and fridges? If you are in a venue with little power but you need lots of lighting, then LED lighting is the answer.

Rigging

Rigging equipment is what your stage lights are sitting on, hanging from or attached to. If the venue does not have any rigging positions you will probably want to use portable stands with cross pieces at the top (called T-bars). These stands mean that any stage lighting from the front shines down on you talented people, from a good angle, and over the heads of the crowd. It is standard practice to have at least two stands, one each side of the venue, with lighting shining at the band from the front (with the audience). If possible, it is also great if you can have a lighting stand in back of your performance area, with lights shining from the back of your band, or even from the side. Other useful positions for band stage lighting is on the floor at the front or side of stage, including lighting for the drum kit.

Next entry, we will talk about some specific LED lighting applications and fixtures and how to control them.

White Hot - Or Not!

PDFPrintE-mail

Lighting has come a long way since the days of incandescent par cans and dimmers.

Club Lights

Today's LED lighting effects for clubs, djs and bands covers everything from moving heads to wash lights to club effects lighting. One of the great things about LED lighting effects is that they produce no heat to speak of, with the exception of the new high power (30 watt and above) LED light sources, which still produce very little heat. This means they can run all night without any kind of thermal damage or duty cycle. Most of the smaller fixtures have no heat management devices (fans, heat sinks) at all! Even the larger LED moving heads have a minimum of fans to keep the light sources cool. Striking fixtures at the end of the night doesn't mean waiting until they cool down. You can grab them right away and pack them in their cases. Performers really appreciate the cooler temperatures on stage as well. For club lights or other permanent installations, this equates to lower air conditioning requirements as the lighting fixtures only minimally contribute to the heat load of the room. Overall, LED is the right choice for many applications due to the lower cost of operation, less heat generated, and most fixtures are lightweight to boot! Top it off with built in DMX 512 control and you have a package that is hard to beat.

Mounting LED Lights - Tip of the Week

PDFPrintE-mail

Ok, so you've done the research, gotten the best LED lights you can afford and are ready to rock out with them at a show. But how the heck do I mount these things? The most common way is to mount them to tripod base lighting stands which have a “T” bar on the top. This bar will usually accommodate up to 4 lights, and sometimes more. So how do they attach to the bar? Many T bars have holes pre-drilled in them and come with bolts and wingnuts. This is a inexpensive and easy way to mount them, but fairly permanent, which can be a good thing and a bad thing.

Other ways to mount LED Lights

An alternative is to use clamps specifically made for LED lighting fixtures. The most common of these is the “O” clamp, which like it's name implies, is shaped like an O and attaches and goes all the way around the bar. This clamp then bolts on to the fixture. Using an O clamp allows you to change around your fixtures, or in the case of larger moving head or otherwise more fragile fixtures, to remove them for transport. Another handy thing to do is to “prewire” your fixtures to your bar. You can attach a power strip or similar to the bar using bolts or plastic zip ties, plug all the fixtures into it, and only have 1 power cord to plug in. This can also be done with DMX control cables, so that all you have to do is plug in your power, and DMX to your contoller, and you are ready to go!
